Alles Liebe Nina
English
Other than my new class for my weak students, I am preparing for Christmas. In China Christmas is known and also celebrated, but very different from us. Christmas is not a holiday her, however, most people know the commercial side of Christmas. However, we, the volunteers, will get two days off for Christmas! The Chinese version of the gift giving is giving apples, oranges and sometimes nuts to friends and family. How Christians actually celebrate Christmas and if Jesus’ birth is such an important part as for us I could not find out so far, because I do not know any Christians that speak English. In the church here the average age is about 60 years, I would say. Anyway, I am trying to find Chinese decoration that will bring the Christmas feeling to me, but also make it a Chinese Christmas. I also am making some decorations myself and I have found candles (only in ONE store in the whole town, but I got them). Making cookies is very difficult because here they have no butter, no vanilla sugar or any other, for us , typical christmas spices!
For my classes I am hoping to show a short little, English Christmas film and then as my “Christmas gift” I will explain to them, the meaning of their English names that I gave them at the beginning of the school year and maybe I will give them apples too J!
Right now we have visitors from Switzerland, which is pretty exciting. They are friends of Jennifer’s. It is exciting, not only because we can finally show somebody how we live, since you can never really do that by just telling and showing pictures, but more exciting is actually that they are traveling around Europe and Asia by bike and hearing their stories is amazing. They are here for about one week.
I am also now planing my January/February vacation, which is really exciting. I let you know where I will be going as soon as I have decided.
I wish you all a wonderful Christmas time!
Love Nina
